Krupicka, Roes shatter Western States 100 mark

By nature, ultramarathons (and ultramarathoners) lie beyond the grasp of those of us who chase more traditional pursuits. Such is the scale of these races, and the men and women who attempt to surmount them, that we can best appreciate them by the numbers. This past Saturday, June 26, when elite New Balance Outdoor Ambassador Anton Krupicka crossed the finish line of the Western States 100 in Auburn, California, he had completed the 100-mile run from Squaw Valley in 15:13:53 - nearly twenty-three minutes better than the previous event record of 15:36:27 set by ultra legend Scott Jurek in 2004. His pace, 9:14 mile splits, was the equivalent of a 4:01:00 marathon pace - run four times in a row over a course "accessible only to hikers, horses and helicopters" with 15,540 feet (2.94 miles) of climbs and nearly 22,970 (4.35 miles) feet of descent. Even more astounding is this: the 2010 event marked Anton's first attempt at the Western States. Most incredible of all: Krupicka finished in second place.

Title IX turns XXXVIII

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 is not a particularly eventful day on the national running scene. The Active.com calendar lists eleven running events nationwide, typical of a midweek date in late June. As runners in Gardiner, NY's Solstice Run 15k and Austin's Sunstroke Summer Stampede toe the starting line, few will have any sense of the significance of the day - much less the way in which it connects a twelve-term congresswoman from Hawaii, an Olympic hopeful and a retired track coach from suburban New Jersey.

2010 New Balance Nationals Recap And Reflection

They sprinted. They jumped. They danced. They posed. They dazzled the crowd with national, meet, and personal records, and with their smiles. The 2700 athletes participating in the 2010 New Balance Nationals and their parents and coaches braved high humidity and temperatures in the mid 90's to close out the track year with everything they had left in the tank.

Remembering Sarah Bowman's Record-Setting Mile

On June 17th, 2010, hundreds of the top high school athletes in the country will assemble on the campus of North Carolina A&T University for the New Balance Nationals. While this marks the first time that New Balance has sponsored the meet formerly known as the Outdoor Nationals, many of the members of Team New Balance have made their mark in Greensboro. Five years ago, in what has been called 'the greatest high school girls mile race ever', a young woman from Warrenton, Virginia ran the third-fastest time ever recorded by a female high school runner (and the fastest ever in a high school-only field). Here's a taste of the story of Sarah Bowman's incredible accomplishment as told via accounts and reports at the time.
