Sonic Welds, Hair Dryers and Goat Leather

The Sonic welded 574 attracted a fair bit of attention when it was announced in January. The Sonic welded collection is a new series of colors and textures and the first New Balance shoes made with a sonic welding process. Sonic welding utilizes tremendous heat and pressure to create an airtight (and watertight) seal using significantly less labor than is required for traditional stitching. To commemorate their launch this week, we threw a few questions about the shoes at New Balance Senior Product Developer Kenneth Straka. And in celebration of that saved labor, Ken spoke to us from a beach in Bali.

Laissez les bon temps rouler

The ‘Aints put the “S” back in their name when they beat Indy. New Balance made Mardi Gras shoes. It’s a big year for New Orleans. But even if you’re not headed down for the big party, celebrate in style with the Mardi Gras edition 525 for men and 460 for women. Design elements include a fleur de lis on the tongue and heel, beaded laces, gender-specific mask on the insert and green, purple and gold accents. The comfort and the lightweight design of both models lets you stroll, amble or wobble comfortably to the early morning hours without ever tiring out your feet. King’s models available at Finish Line, Shoe Carnival and Shoe Show. See the queen’s model in white here and in black here.

Meet the Concepts x New Balance "Freedom Trail" Collection

Introducing the latest collection from our Partnership Program - The Freedom Trail® Collection - developed in partnership with Concepts, of Cambridge. Inspired by one of Boston’s most celebrated landmarks, The Freedom Trail®, the collection pays homage to the shared importance of historic Boston - home to both Concepts and New Balance. With a nod to the Freedom Trail®’s red footpath and the brown brick of Boston’s antiquated North End neighborhood, the shoes came to life in premium brown leather and red accents. Check out the rundown of the collection, along with loads of photos, over at HighSnobiety.
