The Sonic welded 574 attracted a fair bit of attention when it was announced in January. The Sonic welded collection is a new series of colors and textures and the first New Balance shoes made with a sonic welding process. Sonic welding utilizes tremendous heat and pressure to create an airtight (and watertight) seal using significantly less labor than is required for traditional stitching. To commemorate their launch this week, we threw a few questions about the shoes at New Balance Senior Product Developer Kenneth Straka. And in celebration of that saved labor, Ken spoke to us from a beach in Bali.
To promote our partnership with 686 on a limited snowboarding and sneaker collection, we held an East Coast launch event last night at Concepts in Cambridge, MA. The usual sneaker and snow folks were on hand and had their fair share of praise for the wares.
Made from remnant material, we made 480 limited-edition pairs of our classic 574s, each with a personality as unique as the person who owns them. For each shoe, we created an exclusive video 'vignette' - a portrait of the 574 experience that connects each pair with the owner, to be claimed online.
