Don Porcella's Pipe Cleaner NB's

Don Porcella's Pipe Cleaner NB's

New York-based visual artist Don Porcella is garnering a great deal of attention lately for a series of works created from pipe cleaners, including a pair of what appear to be 574's (although actual design fidelity may vary, what with such unusual materials). No word yet on whether the team behind Sonic welding is considering incorporating these materials into future products.

Sonic Welds, Hair Dryers and Goat Leather

The Sonic welded 574 attracted a fair bit of attention when it was announced in January. The Sonic welded collection is a new series of colors and textures and the first New Balance shoes made with a sonic welding process. Sonic welding utilizes tremendous heat and pressure to create an airtight (and watertight) seal using significantly less labor than is required for traditional stitching. To commemorate their launch this week, we threw a few questions about the shoes at New Balance Senior Product Developer Kenneth Straka. And in celebration of that saved labor, Ken spoke to us from a beach in Bali.

Jurjen Semeijn goes out of the box

For a project entitled 'Out of the Box', Amsterdam-based designer Jurjen Semeijn has created a series of replica paper shoes made solely from the boxes in which the originals came. Among his subjects: The New Balance 574 shown here.

Behind New Balance 365

There is a certain symmetry to the Stockholm studio in which a motley collection of set designers, prop builders and actors have gathered - wall-to-wall grey interior balanced with the grey exterior of the Swedish winter sky. Inside, a team assembled by New Balance and Mother, including film director Jesper Koothoofd are occupied with what will eventually become a rather unique alarm clock. An alarm clock might well be helpful here, as daylight is in short supply (literally) while the days are long for a crew tasked with completing eighty-eight short films, each exploring the idea of balance in support of a different New Balance silhouette to be introduced as part of the Spring 2010 Collection.
